Photo Shoot Behind the Scenes

So, in case I haven’t mentioned it before, I have a Lolita Fashion indie brand called PRINCESS DEE-LICIOUS.

I can’t remember if I’ve talked about Princess Dee-Licious around here before and I thought I should give some context for today’s post, just in case I hadn’t.

Anyway, Princess Dee-Licious is my brand.  I started it back in 2014.  I have original designs and I do custom piece made to order.  Basically, I am the head (only) designer and seamstress … and apparently model.

That’s right!  I know I keep saying I’m not a fashionista (and I’m really not) but somehow I am ending up in these situations where I have to act like one.  This time, I’m modeling the upcoming releases for the brand.

My favorite (and only) photographer in Baton Rouge Wil Norwood of Photo Anomaly took all the pictures.  He’s a doll and he’s super familiar with the J-Fashion, kawaii, Lolita, gyaru, anime, manga, convention, and nerd scenes, besides being a legitimately good photographer!

Royal Rose Harlequin photo shoot

We shot at Lake Kernan, all out in nature.  Or as “out in nature” as you can be on a college campus.

The print we shot today was the re-release of my first design, Royal Rose Harlequin.

I updated the designs and changed some things that I think make the coordinates much better than the originals so I’m very excited about it.

All these pictures are the un-retouched, originals but Wil is going to use his photographer magic to make them all nice and pretty.  I can’t wait.

I have another session with Will scheduled for Friday, to finish Royal Rose Harlequin and to shoot my first new design release, Elegant Jeweled Drape.

Just so you know, I will be releasing three design collections before December: Royal Rose Harlequin (redesign), Elegant Jeweled Drape & Nutcracker Prince’s Army.

The shop is over on Storenvy, and you can check it out, and follow it, right now so you will be notified when the different collections are available for order.

Ok, I’m going to go to bed now, or maybe stay up and play with my planner, who really knows.

Faux Freckles Kawaii Makeup Tutorial

Before I get started, I should warn you, I am NOT a beauty guru!

Just like I say with my weekly outfits, which are there for inspiration and fun, I am NOT, IN ANY WAY, a fashion/beauty/style expert.

I like what I like, so do what I do, and if it also works for you too, then that’s great, if not I’m sorry.  But please don’t hate me!

Now back to the regularly scheduled make up tutorial.

Ok cool kids, I don’t know if any of you are familiar with Jackie Aina on YouTube.  She’s a beautiful black girl that makes wonderful beauty videos.  She’s also funny, down-to-earth and really good at what she does.  My respect for her is through the roof.

Anyway, I’m subscribed to her channel, and came across her Natural Skin Makeup + Faux Freckles Tutorial a while ago.

I was so inspired by it that I tried my own Lolita version.

Mechacon Lolita Makeup

First I did it for Mechacon in New Orleans in August.

Then, I did it again for AWA in Atlanta in September.

And then I realized that it is my new favorite Lolita make.

And then I decided to try my hand at making a tutorial for it.

So, here we go.

Faux Freckles Kawaii Makeup

  1. It’s best to start with a fresh face so wash, cleanse, tone & moisturize first!
  2. Prime the whole face, especially sweat or shine prone areas like the forehead, high cheeks and above the upper lip.
  3. Put foundation on and around eyes and nose.
  4. Prime eyelids with a long lasting eye shadow primer.  This prevents creases and color loss over the course of a busy day.
  5. Apply a brown eye shadow to the crease with a bullet tip brush.
  6. All over the eye lid apply a light cream, beige, or white eye shadow.
  7. Apply the darkest eye shadow to the outer corner with an angled brush.
  8. Gently blend the colors together with a soft rounded brush.
  9. Tightly line the outer eye with darkest brown eye shadow on the angled brush.
  10. Line the inner corner, top and bottom, and the water line with white eye liner.
  11. Cover the light color on the eye lid with a full glitter eye shadow.
  12. Fill in and shape eye brows with a dark brown eye pencil.  And highlight under the eyebrows with a warm toned, light colored, matte eye shadow.
  13. Mascara all the eyelashes!
  14. Finish applying foundation to the rest of the face.  Be sure to buff and swirl the foundation instead of brushing it on to avoid lines and streaks.
  15. Concealer, in a half shade lighter than the foundation, goes under the eyes, and in the center of the forehead.
  16. Contour the face with a foundation, a full shade darker, or contour cream. It goes around the outline of the face, cuts the cheeks in half, either side of the nose, traces the bottom lip and outlines the chin.
  17. Highlight the face with a warm tones highlight.  Highlight goes in the center of the forehead, down the center of the nose, below the eyes but above the cheeks, along the cupid’s bow of the top lip, and the center of the chin.
  18. Blend the whole face well. Remember small circles and little pats, no broad strokes.
  19. Apply cream blush to apples of the cheeks and blend out.
  20. To make freckles get two shades of brown foundation/concealer/cream makeup.  Dilute them with water/makeup oil/essential oil.  I use Moroccan Argon oil.
  21. Using a tiny concealer brush apply random sized dots across the cheeks and nose between the eyes and the mouth.
  22. Apply powder blush on the cheeks over the “freckles”on the cheeks.  It makes them looks more realistic or something.  Who even knows.
  23. Then lips.  I do natural looking lipstick colors with this look, but I think pinks, or red could be cute too!
  24. Set everything in place with setting powder and setting spray.

Faux Freckles Kawaii makeup

And that’s it.  In just 24 simple steps you too can be a freckled doll (If it doesn’t work for you, please see the disclaimer.  And also don’t hate me!).

If you’re more of a visual person, check out the video version of this tutorial over on my YouTube channel, Lifestyle Cute.

Let me know if you try this tutorial and if it works for you.

I’m going to finish getting dressed and go the fabric store, since I’m all made up now anyway!

Creative Blerd Paperie Post Cover

Creative Blerd

Ok, so I think it can be agreed that I’m a planner addict, if you have any question about, take a look at my Instagram, @himeblackonyx, for evidence.

And, if you hang around me for a while, blog, Instagram and Facebook, anywhere where you can find me, for long enough, you’ll find out I’m just a plain old stationary addict.

I love all things paper.  From notebooks to paperclips, notepads and sticky notes, washi tape or planner, I’m all about paper.

And, I’ve been thinking lately, after a lifetime of paper hoarding, and over a year of diy decorative planning that maybe there are people who might like my particular brand of kawaii, classy, floral, feminine, shabby chic, adorable, and outrageous.

So I decided to open my own stationary shop, Creative Blerd Paperie.

Creative Blerd Paperie logo

Creative Blerd Paperie is going to exist on Storenvy.  That is where the store is instead of Etsy because my other business, my Lolita brand, Princess Dee-Licious, is on Storenvy, Storenvy doesn’t charge monthly fees, and personally, I like Storenvy so that’s what I’m going with.

The plan for Creative Blerd Paperie is to be a full service stationary shop.

I want to offer planner goods, like different ized planner inserts, weekly and monthly kits, functional and decorative stickers.  As well as accessories like paper clips, bands, dashboards, and charms.

Creative Blerd Paperie logo

My little sister, I call her Baby Bug, drew the logo for me.  She will undoubtedly be doing some art for Creative Blerd Paperie as well.

But I don’t want to be limited to planners.  I love notebooks, binders, pencil cases, sticky notes, pens, washi tape, all of that.  And I want Creative Blerd Paperie to have all of that too.

So, needless to say, I’m excited!

Creative Blerd Paperie will be launching December 1, 2016 as a fully ready-to-ship shop.  If at all possible, I will do a soft launch at the end of November, just in time for Black Friday sales.  But I’ll keep you up to date.

If you want to be updated on everything, you can follow the shop on Storenvy.  I am also starting a Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for the brand.

The countdown has begun for the official launch.

I can’t wait!

Weekly Meal Prep

One of the things I have lost since starting law school is free time to cook.  It is so sad how often I resort to fast food, or microwavable meals just because there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to defrost, thaw, season, cook and eat a meal.

My saving grace has been prepping my weekly meals ahead of time.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m not very good at this, I fail more weeks that I succeed, but I aspire to greatness, so I keep trying.  I know if I get around to meal prepping for the week then my week is going to go well , if I don’t, I usually end up stressing for seven days.

I have a few go-to meals that I pull out every week, and my personal favorite is Overnight Oatmeal.

Overnight Oatmeal layers: chia, oats, almond milk, Greek yogurt

Overnight Oatmeal: 1 tablespoon chia, 3/4 cup oats, 2 splashes almond milk, 2 ice cream scoops Greek yogurt

It may not look like much, but trust me, it’s delicious.

Overnight Oatmeal Cups

It was actually my mama, over Christmas break last year, that put me on to Overnight Oatmeal, even before I found it on Pinterest.  I told her I wanted to eat healthier and this was her suggestion.

Now I eat it four to five days a week, on all my school days.

Overnight Oatmeal Cups

I love Overnight Oatmeal because it’s so simple to prepare and ready when I want it.

Overnight Oatmeal Ingredients

I make all of my Overnight Oatmeal Sunday night.  I use 3/4 cup of oats, 1 tablespoon of Chia, 2 ice cream scoops of vanilla Greek yogurt, and 2 “splashes” of vanilla almond milk.  Mix it all together in a food container bowl with a lid, and the refrigerator, at least overnight.

Overnight Oatmeal stack in the refrigerator

Then, you have travel-sized breakfast perfect for on-the-go.

I hear you can make flavored Overnight Oatmeal by adding fruit, or different spreads, like Nutella or peanut butter, I haven’t tried it yet, but I will.

How do you do your Overnight Oatmeal, if you do?  If not, what are your go-to on-the-go meals?  Let me know!

Bedroom Rug Knitting at the Tea House

Knitted Bedroom Rug

I don’t know if you were aware, but I have been knitting for as long as I’ve had hands.  Literally, I came out of the womb, with my  swaddling already knit.

Ok, I may be exaggerating slightly, but only a little bit!

I didn’t actually start knitting until high school, but at this point it feels like forever.  It’s been 7 years, I could be common law married in some states in that time.

But I digress.  Onward to the purpose of this post, to tell you about my current knitting project.

Bedroom Rug knitted with Big Twist yarn in Blush Pink and Cream

I’m making a flat circle rug for my bedroom.

Bedroom Rug right side

I’m making the flat circle based on a tutorial I found forever ago on Alyoops!

I like her so much I follow her blog actually.

Anyway, the pattern is really nice and simple, all that it requires is seven increases every other row a certain number of stitches apart.  Like, the first time increasing, increase by knitting in the front and back of one stitch or every other stitch and on the next row knit every stitch; the second time increasing, knit in the front and back of one stitch every 2 stitches then knit the next row; the third time increasing, increase by knitting in the front and back of one stitch every 3 stitches, then knit the whole next row and so on until the circle is complete.

I might not be explaining that clearly enough.  You should just just check Alyoops! post.

Moving on!

Like I said, I found this tutorial forever ago, on Pinterest, and I’ve never had a good project for it.

But, now I do!

Big Twist yarn in Blush Pink and Cream

The yarn I’m using is Big Twist Value in Blush Pink and Cream.  It’s 100% acrylic, worsted weight.  Each skein is 6oz, 371 yards.  It is something cheap I had around the house.  My Yin won’t let me buy anything new until I work through what I have in the craft room right now.  These have been in the craft room since before I moved last year so it was certainly time to use them up.

Bedroom Rug right side active knitting

Bedroom Rug wrong side

I’m working on decorations for my bedroom and this rug will be perfect.  This pink and light brown are gonna go great with the shabby chic French cottage theme I’m trying to make happen.

Bedroom Rug stitch markers

I started this on size 10 double point needles but it over ran them pretty quickly.  I moved it to size 10 circulars not too long ago.  I don’t know what size I’m trying to make it so I’m going to keep  on knitting until the rug over runs the circulars too, then I’ll call it done.

Bedroom Rug beginning marker

What ever yarn I have left over then will go to some smaller decorative rugs for the vanity and in front of the mirror.

If you want to follow this project, I’m fairly active on Ravelry.

Week 41 Full Spread

Week 41 Planner Set Up

I am finally back in my Recollections Organize It! binder.  I mentioned in a post a while back that I’m using it as my main planner instead of getting another spiral bound planner like I had last year.

I haven’t been using it recently because my computer, printer and Silhouette were all conspiring against me, but, I bought a new laptop last week so I can get back into it.

Week 41 Planner Spread

I don’t know if I mentioned before, I made my inserts.  The inserts are Sunday to Saturday, with a small sidebar on the left page and a full size sidebar on the right.

I also made the sticker kit for the month.  The theme is haunted house.  Red and black are the only colors I used for the kit, and I found spooky clipart online for the backgrounds.

First Half of Week 41 (before the pen)Second Half of Week 41 (before the pen)

There are two washi tapes this weeks.  The main washi tape I used is grey with a historical script print all over it.  I got it from Michael’s last year, when I began decorative planning.  It came in a set with another vintage-looking bird washi.  I thought it coordinated well with the colors of this kit.  The other washi is thin grey and it came in the dispenser of thin  pastel Recollection washi from Michael’s also.

Week 41 Deco

I am doing a month worth of spooky, cutesy, creepy, and Gothic Halloween spreads in October, and one in November since Halloween is on a Monday.  I’ll do another planner walk through like I did in August though, so you can see them, at the end of the month.

Week 41 Full Spread

And here it is filled in at the beginning of the week.  I used fine tip Pentel R.S.V.P. in black and red, my favorite pen, to fill out the spread.

Week 41 Left PageWeek 41 Right Page

Just so you know, my planning style is a mixture of pre-plan and plan-as-I-go.  I put down all the firm plans all at once and then fill in things as they arise during the week.  That’s one of the best things about the Organize It! binder, it’s smaller and more durable than the notebook style planner I carried last year so it’s easier to carry and I’m not worried about destroying it.  The plastic cover, front and back, on last year’s planner were torn off before the year was over, just from my everyday use.

Now that that’s all done I’m off for the night.  Like I said, I’ll be back at the end of the month to show how all the spreads turned out, or you can follow me on Instagram, @himeblackonyx, to see the spreads in real time.

Xavier's Planner

Real Friends Plan Together

So, as I’m sure you are aware, I’m a planner addict .  And one of the best parts about being a planner addict is getting your friends addicted too.

I already told you I got my Yin obsessed with planners.  She now has a Happy Planner and a pretty enviable sticker collection and I would like to think it’s all thanks to me and my enabling influence.

But, we’re not talking about her today, that’s another post for another day.  Today we’re talking about my law school friend Xavier who is the newest member of my planner family.  I’m such a proud planner mama.

Xavier has watched me devolve slowly into planner madness, well not slowly really, quite rapidly actually, over the last year and he finally asked me why, why am I a planner girl, why do I plan obsessively, why do I need it?

And I guess my answer, that planners give me order, that I need the structure, that planners help me feel more in control when my life is controlled by law school, that I depend on my planner, that I know when and where and how and sometimes even why because of my planner, must have convinced him to try out this planner life because he asked me to make one for him.

So, I did!

Xavier is in a fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, and he wanted one of their logo images on his planner.

Xavier's Planner

And I personalized it with his name and a quote that he chose.

Yearly Month at a Glance

His planner is September through August because it’s for school , and it was Septmber when I made it for him.

Month at a Glance

Unlike me, Xavier is a horizontal planner.  I know, I know, but it’s his choice.

Horizontal Weekly Spread

His planner is also a little smaller than the one I carried last year, 8in x 10in instead of the full 8.5in x 11in.

It’s 135 pages with a decorative front cover page, two-page year at a glance, every month has a two-page month at a glance and two-page weekly spreads and a back cover.

I got the planner printed at Office Depot.  I have a discount card there, and it’s right around the corner from my house, so win-win.

The cover is laminated, and in color, while the rest of the planner is printed on 24lb paper which is thicker, and softer and doesn’t bleed or shadow like ordinary copy paper.

I think it’s pretty nice, if I do say so myself.

But, it got me to thinking, maybe somebody else in the world might want a free horizontal planner.  And I decided to take the one I made for Xavier, change a few things, like the name and the image, and make it a printable.

Downloadable Planner

If you want, you can download the printable by clicking the image above.  It’ll take you to a Word document and allow you to customize the name, cover image and quote.

If you do use this printable planner, be sure to post pictures and tag me (@himeblackonyx #pbnplannner) so I will see it and be excited with you.

Take Me Back to AWA

So hey.  I’m three days removed from AWA and have fully conquered my con-crud so I am finally ready to recap the weekend.

First of all, I spent my weekend with Mr. Boyfriend at AWA.  AWA, for the uninitiated, is Anime Weekend Atlanta, a four-day gaming, anime, comic book nerd-splosion.  It’s my favorite, and the only, anime convention in Atlanta that I’ve ever been to.  I’ve been going to AWA since 2012 and this is the first time going with Mr. and my first time cosplaying. Yay me!

We went Friday through Sunday.

He dressed as his LARP character, Bra-Lor, Friday and Arkham Origins Joker Saturday. I wore Lolita Friday and was Arkham Knight Harley Quinn Saturday.  And I made all of our outfits!  Sunday we wore street clothes to just wander and enjoy.

So, let me start by spamming you with pictures from the weekend.

Now for outfits shots of me.

Here is Friday.

And then Saturday.

I’ll have to remember to take make up pictures of my next cosplay.  And I’ll have to take way more outfit pictures too.  I was so busy running around, I completely forgot this weekend.

Mr. Boyfriend posted this picture of us on Instagram!  Aren’t we adorable?

I met this really amazing artist at the convention, Marcus Williams.  He is so nice, and creative, and inspiring.  I seriously ADORE him!

He has a web-comic Tuskegee Heirs that is absolutely amazing.  You should check it out if you get a chance.

And I bought a print of his, from his Black Panther and Storm Heritage fan fiction collection.  It’s getting framed and put up in my bedroom.

I tore down the dealer’s room and bought a lot of other really good stuff too.

I bought a purse and wallet from a Japanese vendor because my wallet is literally denigrating before my very eyes and I don’t have a Lolita purse.

I also bought a full-sized Batman the Animated Series Harley Quinn poster.

I bought a new tea set and a folding fan.

And, from two different shops, I got the sugar cookie ring that’s sitting on the wallet and a carousel bracelet that the designer turned into a choker for me.

Hooray for new things!  Double hooray for new Lolita things!

So much fun, I’m so sad con-season is over.  Now that I’m back at school I just wish I could go back to the convention.  Until next time I guess.
