Baudelairy Type Cropped Sweater

Hey Sweeties,

I am so excited about this project and I’m so happy to finally be able to share it.

So, let’s start with the most exciting part, at least for me, the yarn.

Look at this yarn you guys!!!!!

This yarn is from Red Door Fiber Studios.

Kate from Red Door Fiber Studios is the Yaddy (yarn daddy), the High Lady of Fandom Yarn and basically an all-around beautiful, creative soul who makes AH-mazing yarn. She is the dyer behind some of the most interesting and special fandom inspired yarns.

Kate does limited edition, one-off releases of hand dyed yarns based on fandoms that she is interested in. She has done, for example, Studio Ghibli, Avatar: The Last Air Bender and she did a Pokemon collection in May.

I made a pretty big order from that collection, a couple of sweater quantities, and it wasn’t even everything I wanted. I missed out on a variegated mini skein collection. I’m only crying on the inside.

But, this project was made using Fairy Type, the pink, magenta and blue variegated, Play Rough, the tonal magenta, and Curse, the tonal grey/purple.

This yarn is awesome! Kate makes really interesting color choices, ones that I wouldn’t expect, but am so intrigued by. Like, look at Fairy Type, it’s got such a cool mix of colors that aren’t what you might think to put together for this theme but it is done so very well.

Anyway, I really wanted to use this yarn for this particular pattern as a matter of fact.

The pattern is the Baudelaire Crop by Skeinanigans.

The designer was inspired by The Series of Unfortunate Events to create a cool, dramatic fall wardrobe piece and made this adorable raglan pullover knit top down, in the round (my personal favorite way to make a top!).

First off, it has a detachable collar. I knew immediately I wanted to make a two tone collar, one side in Curse, one side in Play Rough.

I knew I was gonna extend the sleeves to 3/4 length and the original plan was to make the sleeves the opposite color to the collar on that side. I didn’t end up doing that but that was the original plan.

The pattern calls for short or 3/4 length sleeves.

The sweater is designed to be cropped and that was cool to me. I haven’t made a cropped length garment for myself before but I have been doing my best to make things that are outside of my comfort zone. I don’t wear cropped length garments, because I’m not very comfortable with my middle, but you sometimes you have to leap.

This project had some cool techniques, like the bust shaping, which I didn’t do very well, but I enjoyed trying to learn.

Now the Baudelairy Type Crop.

As always, check out all of the hairy details on this project’s Ravelry Page.

Ok, so I generally try to be humble about my makes, I know I’m not the most skilled knitter and that I regularly have mistakes in my finished objects, but I’m going to toot my own horn with this one.

I really like this make, I think it’s pretty freaking awesome, maybe the best thing that I’ve made this year.

As soon as Red Door Fiber announced that she was releasing a Pokemon Collection, I prayed that she was going to have a Fairy Type color way. It was my most ardent wish because while my heart belongs to the original 151, I will never deny my extreme love for Sylveon and Jiggly Puff.

I am obsessed with the fade that I did. The fade from Fairy Type, the variegated, to the the tonal magenta, Play Rough, is kind of immaculate. The second fade from Play Rough to Curse is more jarring, but I am still pretty into it. Play Rough was the tonal designed to coordinate with Fairy Type, that’s why they go together so well. Curse is the tonal for the Ghost Type color way that Red Door offered, that I didn’t get.

I mentioned that I wanted to do the two toned collar, which I did, and that I wanted to do the two tones sleeves, which I didn’t do. I decided at the last minute, based partially on the opinions of my fiance, that it would look better with faded sleeves to match the faded body. I still don’t know if I would prefer the sleeves being different colors but as with everything else I have knit this year, I want to make another one and I could do always try it on my next one.

I already talked about the yarn, but this the first of what will be SEVERAL Red Door orders. Her yarn is so pretty and soft and I really love it and I want to give Kate all of my money. I would have ordered even more yarn from the Pokemon Collection release if I had been able to but the yarn sold out so fast that I scooped up what I could when I could and what I could afford because hand dyed yarn is no joke expensive.

All right, as you can no doubt tell, I AM OBSESSED with this knit. Part of it is the yarn, I’m such a fan of Red Door Fiber Studio, and part of it is how cool and versatile this pattern in. My one suggestion is to do a super stretchy bind off on the bottom. I didn’t do that and it left me with a too tight sweater initially. I had to undo the bind off and do it over.

As always, you can check on me on Ravelry or follow me on Instagram and follow #sundayknits, #deedeecreative & #deedeeknits to see what I’m up to.

I so glad to share this project with you so thanks for checking on me and happy knitting!
